COMM 2010 - Oral Communication
Fall, spring, summer. 3 credits. Letter grades only.
Forbidden Overlap: AEM 2700 .
Prerequisite: fluency in spoken English. Enrollment limited to: 30 students per class (fall and spring) or 15 students per class (summer). Priority given to communication majors and minors, CALS seniors, CALS juniors. Students absent twice during first week of class are dropped from course roster. There is no centralized department waitlist. For individual lecture availability, attend the first day of desired classes. Students wishing to add the course should attend the course.

The course focuses on face-to-face, public communication, but the principles and practices addressed transfer to all purposeful communication situations. While many assume a good speech rests in how well it is delivered, students will learn that a good speech is equally dependent on the development, structure, and integrity of one’s ideas. The objectives of the course are for students to speak effectively and ethically, and listen critically.
Outcome 1: Become better speakers through the practice of choosing and narrowing audience appropriate topics, researching through information competency skills, organizing, developing, and delivering public speeches.
Outcome 2: Use wording that is clear, concise, accurate, and interesting.
Outcome 3: Enhance skills of memory and familiarity.
Outcome 4: Create and apply criteria of effective public speaking.
Outcome 5: Create, prepare, and deliver public speeches.
Outcome 6: Consider ethics of public speaking.
Outcome 7: Develop a deeper understanding of speeches as a collaboration between speaker and audience.
Outcome 8: Help others to become better speakers and listeners through observation, collaboration, and constructive criticism.
